The Green

"The Green" is the last undeveloped city block in Historic Downtown Beaufort. This acre parcel is located in the heart of the residential Old Point and is flanked by Laurens, West, Pinckney, and Short streets (Exhibit A). "The Green" is privately owned and has remained open park space for the public to enjoy since the City of Beaufort was founded in 1711. Every carriage and walking tour stops at this historic space to tell unique stories regarding the soldiers that camped there during the Civil War and the numerous movies that featured scenes of "The Green," including The Big Chill. Most importantly, “The Green” is a place that the citizens of Beaufort County have always come to enjoy picnics and walks with family and friends.

Widgeon Point

Downtown Beaufort is a high density urban residential/commercial district. The relief that an open city block can provide to citizens, tourist, wildlife, and the environment is invaluable. The Beaufort County Open Land Trust believes it is crucial to protect this historic piece of open space from development and is requesting support from the community through fiscal donations.

We are proud of our successful partnership with Beaufort County. The best example of this partnership is our joint effort to protect the ecologically sensitive 160 acres of Widgeon Point on Lemon Island. The County has purchased the property, and the Trust is working to create public access to Widgeon Point for nature walks and bird watching. Chris Marsh of the Lowcountry Institute and his Master Naturalist volunteers are working on the nature trails. The Open Land Trust will be responsible for the maintenance of Widgeon Point and we will be asking for your help with that expense.

Tour-Group Luncheons

The Trust’s Luncheon Program is a very unique opportunity for local clubs and out-of-town tour groups to enjoy a hot, three course home cooked meal prepared by a loyal assembly of volunteers hosted in a lovely historic home in Beaufort. The meal is handpicked from recipes out of our Sea Island Seasons cookbook. An assortment of elegant china sets the scene for this very special lunch experience. Please contact us if you know of any tour group or organization that would enjoy taking part in this unique luncheon.

Community Garden

Community Garden Group x

Our organization currently manages one community garden located in downtown urban Beaufort. Our community garden gives locals access to fresh, nutritious food, and provide numerous educational and environmental experiences. The rewards of expanding our community garden program into the St. Helena Island area are many. Our community has the highest adolescent diabetes rate in the southeastern region of the United States! In general, U.S. children are not eating recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and we are aware they should adopt healthful eating habits to ensure adequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals. We want to help! Nutrition plays a major role in the management of diabetes in children so we would like to donate a portion of this new St. Helena harvest to help improve the health of some of the diabetic children in our area. Perhaps the most important benefit is the opportunity for residents to work side-by-side, utilizing gardens as extraordinary places for learning and laying the foundation of a connected, conscious, sustainable community for friends, neighbors, and future generations.

Our community garden is featured in the recent Lowcountry Weekly article,
"A New/Old Kind of Green".
